New Chief Prelate for Ramanna Nikaya named

Most Venerable Makkulawe Wimala Anu Nayaka Thero has been appointed as the Maha Nayaka Thero of the Ramanna Maha Nikaya.

Makkuluwe Wimala Thero was born on August 25, 1948, in the Makulewa area in Galgamuwa in the Kurunegala District of the North Western Province.

Entering monkhood in 1960, Wimalabhidana Thero was ordained on July 22, 1969.

He had previously held the title of Adhikarana Sangha Nayake of the Ramanna Maha Nikaya and has been awarded the honorary title ‘Aggamaha Panditha’ by Myanmar in March 2019.

Accordingly, Most Venerable Makkulawe Wimalabidhana Thero has been appointed as the 14th Chief Prelate of the Ramanna Maha Nikaya today.

The appointment has been made by the Committee of the Sri Lanka Ramanna Maha Nikaya which convened this morning (22).

This is following the passing away of the Mahanayake of the Ramanna Maha Nikaya Most Venerable Napane Pemasiri Thero.

Pemasiri Thero passed away on Tuesday (November 17) at the age of 98 years while receiving treatment at the Peradeniya Hospital.

The final rites of the late Pemasiri Thero will be held with full state honors this afternoon (22) at the Kundasale National School Grounds. Police have taken steps to restrict traffic in the Kandy area.
