A suspect wanted over several shooting incidents in the Kandana area has been shot dead during a crossfire with the police at Sapugaskanda last night (15), police said.

The suspect was reportedly killed in the shootout as police officers were about to arrest him.

A team of police officers attached to Kandana Police had arrived at the location in order to arrest the suspect based on a tip-off received that he is staying in a rented house in the Sapugaskanda area, the police said.

Kandana Police stated that at that moment, the suspect in question had opened fire at the police officers from inside the house prompting them to return fire.

However, the 49-year-old suspect has died during the shootout, according to police.

Body of the deceased person is placed at the mortuary of Kiribathgoda Hospital, while Sapugaskanda Police are conducting further investigations regarding the incident.
