November 30, 2023   03:03 pm

The petition brought forth against former Sports Minister Roshan Ranasinghe over alleged contempt of court has been fixed for hearing on January 03, 2024.

During today’s proceedings, the Appeals Court instructed Ranasinghe to file his objections, if any, on or before December 15.

The petition had been filed by Attorney-at-Law Dimitri Shiraz Augustus Pietrangeli, alleging that a statement made by the former minister in during a recent parliamentary session was prejudicial to the President of the Appeals Court, his career and character.

The petitioning claims that as per the parliamentary tradition, such statements cannot be made in respect of the judges of the country’s top court.

The petitioning party had further requested the court to impose appropriate punishments against Ranasinghe regarding the charges of contempt of court and to ask him to show cause as to why he should not be penalized.
