The Meteorology Department, on Friday (01 Dec.), issued a ‘Red’ alert for strong winds and rough seas over Bay of Bengal sea areas.

Accordingly, fishing and naval communities in the deep and shallow sea areas in the Southwest Bay of Bengal were warned of strong winds and rough seas as the low-pressure area over the Southeast Bay of Bengal has developed into a depression, and is likely to further intensify into a cyclone by 03 December.

The advisory read that the low-pressure area is located near latitude 9.5°N and longitude 86.0°E, about 550km from Trincomalee.

It is expected to move west and northwestward near north coast of Sri Lanka and move north Tamil Nadu coast by 04 December.

Accordingly, naval and fishing communities have been advised to refrain from venturing into sea areas off the coast extending from Mannar to Pottuvil via Kankesanthurai, Trincomalee and Batticaloa and in to the marked areas for the next 48 hours.

Meanwhile, those who are out at the aforementioned sea regions have been advised to return to coasts or moved safer areas immediately.
