Police detect 125 traffic offences through CCTV system on first day

Owners of 125 vehicles have been issued warning over traffic offences as a preliminary step in the pilot project launched in Colombo on Monday (22 Jan.), where a 24-hour surveillance system wasw implemented to monitor traffic violations.

According to police, amongst the violations detected, traffic lane violations and failing to stop at red lights were seen as the most common offences.

Sri Lanka Police launched a special programme yesterday, through which traffic offenders in Colombo will be traced using a CCTV surveillance camera system.

A pilot project of the initiative commenced in the country’s commercial capital on 22 January, and will continue until 31 January, in a bid to curb traffic violations.

Police Media Spokesman SSP Nihal Thalduwa explained that the CCTV camera system will be monitored by police personnel stationed in Colombo, after which, the registered owner of the relevant vehicle will be notified in the event a traffic offence is recorded.

SSP Thalduwa further noted that while the owner of the vehicle will be informed of any such offences during the pilot project, the issuance of fines will commence after 31 January.
