Presidential candidate Mohammed Ilyas passes away

A. Mohammed Ilyas, who was contesting the 2024 Presidential Election as an independent candidate, has passed away at the age of 78.

He had reportedly passed away while receiving treatment at the Puttalam Hospital last night (22), following a sudden illness.

He had previously served as a Member of Parliament during the government of former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga.

Ilyas had submitted nominations on August 15 to contest the upcoming presidential election and was reportedly contesting the presidential poll for the fourth time after also being a candidate in 2010, 2015 and 2019.
