Increase in Sri Lankans migrating for foreign employments

The Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) states that Sri Lanka has seen a significant increase in the number of Sri Lankans departing for overseas employments in September 2024, compared to the same period in 2023.

The SLBFE highlighted that accordingly, there has been a 10% increase in Sri Lankans departing for foreign employments as 28,344 individuals have been expatriated in the in the month of September alone in 2024. The figure was recorded as 25,716 in September 2023, according to the SLBFE.

Meanwhile, over 240,000 Sri Lankans have left for overseas employment within the first 09 months of 2024, it added, noting that this includes 99,939 females and 142,170 males.

The total number of skilled workers who have departed for foreign employment thus far in 2024 is 70,396 while 3,704 others have left for semi-skilled jobs.

The highest number of Sri Lankans has sought employment opportunities in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia so far in 2024, as per figures released by the SLBFE. 

Meanwhile, 6,391 Sri Lankans have departed for jobs in Israel in the first 9 months of 2024, while 6,295 individuals have left for Japan and 5,870 others for South Korea.
