A programme to fix microchips on stray dogs to collect and maintain their information has been initiated under the intervention of the Homagama Pradeshiya Sabha.
The system enables authorities to retrieve comprehensive information about the animals, including their vaccination status and location, in the event of a dog bite or for other necessary purposes.
Stray dogs without owners can be seen in many parts of the island, with even the tourist city of Galle currently facing a significant issue with roaming street dogs.
Obtaining accurate data and statistics on such stray dogs remains a challenging task.
Against this backdrop, a programme to insert microchips into stray dogs to gather their information has been launched with the intervention of the Homagama Pradeshiya Sabha.
Through this initiative, authorities will be able to obtain a comprehensive report on an animal's vaccination status and condition in the event of a stray dog bite or any other situation requiring such information.
Furthermore, the system will also enable authorities to track and identify the location of the animals.
Meanwhile, a programme aimed at eradicating rabies through the vaccination and registration of dogs was recently conducted at the Hatton-Dickoya Urban Council Hall.
