Police Constable Susantha Hettiarachchi attached to the Sooriyakanda Police Station, who was suspended following a confrontation with National People's Power (NPP) Ratnapura District MP Shantha Padma Kumara, has been discharged from the case filed against him.
The order was issued today (02) when the case was taken up before the Embilipitiya Magistrate's Court.
Police had filed the case against the constable over allegations of obstructing a public road, criminal intimidation and criminal harassment.
When the Magistrate questioned the police over their failure to file charges, police informed court that they needed to obtain instructions from the Legal Division.
Attorney Vijitha G. Punchihewa, appearing on behalf of the constable, raised concerns regarding the conduct of police.
Speaking after the proceedings, Attorney Punchihewa said the Magistrate had ordered the constable's discharge due to the police's failure to proceed with the charges.
The incident was reported following a confrontation between the MP and the police constable after a cannabis raid in the Sooriyakanda area. Both parties subsequently filed cases against each other.
