Police have confirmed that the individual killed in a shooting carried out last night targeting a three-wheeler in the Kappalthurai area of Trincomalee was a naval rating.

The victim, who was driving the three-wheeler, died at the scene. He has been identified as a 39-year-old resident of Trincomalee.

Two other individuals, aged 28 and 38, both residents of the Anandakulama area, sustained injuries and were admitted to Trincomalee Hospital. One of them was subsequently transferred to Anuradhapura Hospital for further treatment.

The shooting occurred last night (02), when a group of people inside a three-wheeler parked by the roadside was targeted by a gunman.

Preliminary investigations have revealed that the shooting was carried out using a T-56 assault rifle.

Further investigations have indicated that a dispute linked to drug trafficking may have led to the incident.

The Police Media Division stated that several police teams, including officers from the Trincomalee Division Crime Investigation Bureau, have launched investigations into the incident.
