The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Amman confirms that all Embassy staff and members of the Sri Lankan community in Jordan are completely safe following a security incident that occurred earlier today.
According to Jordan’s Public Security Directorate (PSD), an attack involving a sharp object took place at approximately 12:20 p.m. in front of the Embassy building, resulting in the tragic death of Corporal Jawad Ali Khalaf Al-Salaita while he was performing his official duties.
A police patrol intervened immediately at the scene, successfully overpowering and arresting the suspect. The commanding officer of the patrol sustained facial injuries during the confrontation and was promptly transported to the hospital, where he remains in stable condition, the embassy said in a statement.
It said that preliminary investigations conducted by the PSD indicate that the suspect had planned the attack against security personnel, and authorities have formally classified the incident as a terrorist act while a comprehensive investigation is currently underway.
The Embassy of Sri Lanka extended its deepest condolences and sympathy to the family and colleagues of the late Corporal Al-Salaita and said they mourns his loss alongside the people and government of Jordan.
