The Department of Irrigation has taken steps to open two additional spill gates of the Deduru Oya Reservoir by one foot each, following an increase in the volume of water flowing into the reservoir.

Accordingly, the total number of spill gates opened by one foot will increase to eight with this.

A water discharge of 5,500 cubic feet per second is currently being released from the reservoir into the Deduru Oya, according to the Department of Irrigation.

The Department further stated that the extent to which the spill gates are opened may be adjusted depending on rainfall and the volume of water flowing into the reservoir.

In view of this situation, the Department of Irrigation has urged residents living in downstream areas of the Deduru Oya to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions.

Meanwhile, two spill gates of the Victoria Reservoir have reportedly opened automatically following heavy rainfall.
