Court permits Yoshitha Rajapaksa to travel abroad

September 28, 2016   11:32 am

The Colombo High Court today granted permission to Yoshitha Rajapaksa to leave the country for one month to receive medical treatment.

Rajapaksa, who was released on bail after being arrested under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, had requested through his attorneys the release of his passport which was handed over to the Kaduwela Magistrate’s Court.

According to the request, Yoshitha Rajapaksa requires surgery on his foot and therefore needs to travel overseas.

The attorney general had objected to this request, however High Court Judge AAR Heyyantuduwa emphasized that any person will be considered innocent until they are proven guilty by the court.

Therefore the court granted permission for Rajapaksa to travel overseas for a period  of one month in order to receive medical treatment and ordered that his passport be released on two surety bail of Rs 1 million each.
