CID to probe false rumours of fuel shortage

November 20, 2017   03:22 pm

The Ministry of Petroleum Resources Development has lodged a complaint with the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) regarding false information being spread alleging a fuel shortage in the country.

Addressing a press conference held today in Colombo, Minister Arjuna Ranatunga dispelled the rumours doing the rounds that there is a shortage of fuel in the country, which has resulted in long queues as several filling stations across the country since last night.

The minister said that a complaint has been lodged with the CID to look into the individuals who are spreading such false information and misleading the public through the internet and text messages.

Ranarunga said that the public should not have any fears regarding incorrect reports as there are sufficient stocks of petrol and diesel in the country and that three more shipments of fuel is expected to reach the country within the next 2 weeks.

He said that the public should not panic over such issues as filling stations have been supplied with more fuel than the demand. The Minister of Petroleum Resources Development said that if such a situation of any fuel shortage does occur and fuel needs to be used sparingly, he will hold a special press conference and inform the country.

However, he stated if it is found that certain filling stations are hoarding fuel, then action will be taken against such places.

Ranatunga stated that they suspect as to whether a certain anti-government group is responsible for spreading such misinformation ahead of an election.
