Suspect arrested over murder of Welikada Prison Training School’s chief jailor

A person, who is suspected of aiding and abetting the murder of the Chief Jailor of Welikada Prison Training School, has been arrested in Ambalangoda, the Police Media Spokesperson said.

On the 13th of August, a group of officers attached to Ambalangoda Police had apprehended two suspects along with 2g 790mg of heroin and interrogated the duo for seven days under detention orders.

One of the two suspects, a 27-year-old named Pinnaduwage Manjula Ranga Kumara residing at Thiranagama in Hikkaduwa, was identified as a suspect who had aided and abetted the murder of chief jailor of Welikada Prison Training School.

The chief jailor, Thilina Ruwan Thihara, was shot dead at Kuleegoda Junction in Ambalangoda at around 6.00 pm on August 03. He had succumbed to injuries after being admitted to Balapitiya Base Hospital.

The police have recovered 63 live ammunition rounds used for the T-56 rifle hidden at his house and 15 SIM cards by further interrogating the suspect.

The two suspects are to be produced before the Balapitiya Magistrate’s Court today (20) over the charges of possession of drugs, while Manjula Ranga Kumara is due to present submissions to the court on aiding and abetting accusation.

Ambalangoda Police is conducting further investigations into the incident.
