Four persons including a teacher and three students have reportedly drowned after a boat capsized on a lake at Thandamalai in Kokkadicholai, Batticaloa.

According to reports, the three boys were riding on a canoe on the Minachchiodei Lake when it had suddenly capsized and they were submerged underwater.

A teacher who had attempted to rescue them had also drowned, police said.

Police said that the 27-year-old male teacher and the three 16-year-old boys were reported missing after the capsizing of the boat.

The bodies of the missing teacher and three boys were later recovered by search teams, the police said.

The victims are residents of Kaludanveli in Wellawali.

They were part of a group of three tuition class teachers and eleven students (Grade 11), including 07 female students, who had visited the location in question.

The three teenage boys in question were riding on a canoe on the lake when it had suddenly capsized while one of the teachers present had attempted to rescue them. However, all four of them had drowned, police said.

The bodies of the drowning victims have been placed at the mortuary of the Batticaloa Hospital following the autopsy.
