Man found guilty of brutal murder of wife sentenced to death after 14 years

A person has been sentenced to death after being found guilty over an incident of causing serious injuries to his wife, a mother-of-two, by assaulting her and setting her on fire after dousing her with kerosene inside a room of their house.

This order was issued by the North Central Provincial High Court Judge Manoj Thalgodapitiya.

The Attorney General had filed indictments against the accused before Anuradhapura High Court as per Section 296 of the Penal Code, charging him with assault and causing serious injuries which led to death by setting his wife on fire after dousing her with kerosene in the Thammennawa area on 26 January, 2010.

Issuing the verdict, the judge stated that the prosecution had been able to prove the allegations against the accused beyond reasonable doubt.

The preliminary hearing of this case was held before the Thambuttegama Magistrate’s Court and later referred to the Anuradhapura High Court for further hearing after filing of the indictments by the Attorney General.

The former Judicial Medical Officer of Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital and 11 others had been named as witnesses in the case.
