The overall rate of inflation as measured by the Colombo Consumer Price Index (CCPI) on year-on-year (y-o-y) basis increased to 1.5% in April 2024, the Department of Census & Statistics (DCS) says.

Last month, the CCPI-based inflation was calculated at 0.9%, according to the latest figures published by the DCS.

On a year-on-year basis, the inflation of food group dropped to 2.9% in April 2024 from 3.8% in March 2024 while the inflation of the non-food group climbed to 0.9% in April from -0.5% in March 2024.

The contributions to the inflation rate of April 2024 from the food group and non-food group were 0.9% and 0.58%, respectively. The DCS attributed this to the price increases in groups of transport, alcoholic beverages, tobacco and narcotics, education, restaurants and hotels, miscellaneous goods and services, recreation and culture, communication, clothing and footwear, furnishing household equipment and routine household maintenance, and price decreases recorded in the groups of housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels, and health compared to the month of April 2023.
