Horana shooting: Suspected gunman arrested at BIA trying to flee country

The suspected gunman in the shooting incident that took place in Horana this afternoon (05), has been arrested at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) while attempting to flee to Dubai, Police Media Spokesperson DIG Nihal Thalduwa said.

The arrest has been carried out after he was identified through the automated facial recognition system installed at the airport in Katunayake, the police revealed.

One person was injured and hospitalised following a shooting incident that took place in the Graceland Estate, Horana today.

Police said that two unidentified individuals who arrived on a motorcycle had opened fire at a person who was travelling in a double cab. The injured person is currently receiving treatment at Horana Base Hospital, according to police.

Preliminary police investigations have revealed that the shooting has been carried out as a result of a long-standing dispute between the two parties involved.

The 31-year-old arrested suspect, identified as Ashen Janith Kumara is a resident of the Horaketiya area of Horana, as per police.

The officers of Police Special Task Force (STF) have taken custody of the motorcycle on which the assailants arrived at the scene.

Horana Police is conducting further investigations regarding the incident.
