The number of confirmed dengue patients reported in Sri Lanka so far this year has increased to 35,228, according to the Director of the National Dengue Control Unit, Dr. Kapila Kannangara.
Speaking on Ada Derana’s “Big Focus” program, he stated that this represents an increase of around 30% to 40% compared to the previous year.
The highest number of cases have been reported from the Western Province, and the majority of them have been detected in the Colombo District.
Meanwhile, a significant number of dengue cases have been recorded in Matara and Galle districts in the Southern Province, Kandy District in the Central Province, and Ratnapura District in the Sabaragamuwa Province.
About 80% of total dengue cases have been reported from Colombo, Gampaha, Ratnapura, Matara, Galle, and Kandy districts.
He further noted that the increase in the number of dengue patients has been influenced by heavy rainfall associated with Cyclone Ditwah and subsequent intermittent showers across the island.
Meanwhile, Dr. Kannangara confirmed that another dengue death was reported today (05), bringing the total number of deaths so far this year to 20.
He stated that five of the deceased were males and the rest were females, and that three children are also among this year’s death toll.
Dr. Kannangara further added that a total of 29 dengue-related deaths were recorded in 2025.
