‘Red’ advisory issued for strong winds and rough seas; fishermen advised not to go to sea

A ‘Red’ advisory has been issued by the Department of Meteorology for rough sea conditions and strong winds for sea areas extending from Trincomalee to Kankasanthurai via Mullaittivu and Kalpitiya to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle and Hambantota.

 

Accordingly, naval and fishing communities have been advised not to venture out to sea until further notice.

 

The advisory, issued at 06.30 a.m. today (07) will remain in effect until 10.30 a.m. tomorrow (08).

 

According to the Met. Department, the sea areas off the coasts extending from Kankasanthurai to Kalpitiya via Mannar will be very rough at times with strong gusty winds up to 60-70 kmph.

 

The sea areas off the coasts extending from Trincomalee to Kankasanthurai viaMullaittivu and Kalpitiya to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle and Hambantota will be rough at times with strong gusty winds up to 50-60 kmph.

 

Meanwhile, the wave height may increase about 2.0 – 2.5 meters in the sea areas off the coast extending from Mannar to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle and Hambantota, the Met. Department added.

 

Naval and fishing communities engaging in fishing and naval activities in the aforementioned sea areas have been requested to remain vigilant in this regard.
