Minister of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs Ananda Wijepala says that a special discussion on the prevailing situations in the country’s prisons will be held this evening (07), chaired by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.

Speaking in Parliament today, the Minister said the government is taking steps to bring the situation under control while prioritizing the safety of both inmates and prison officers.

However, he stressed that such incidents do not pose a threat to national security, adding that several short-term and long-term measures have already been proposed to address issues within the prison system.

The Minister further stated that a Cabinet committee has been appointed under the leadership of the Minister of Justice to look into these matters.

“We are committed to ensuring the safety of all citizens of this country. At the same time, we are working to bring these situations under control while ensuring the safety of inmates and all prison officials. Several short-term and long-term programmes have been proposed, and the Cabinet has already appointed a committee chaired by the Minister of Justice,” he said.

He added that President Dissanayake has also convened a special discussion today with the participation of relevant stakeholders, and urgent measures will be taken accordingly.
