A suspected close associate of organised crime figure Kanjipani Imran, known as “Ratmalane Saima,” has been ordered to be detained for 48 hours for questioning, police said.

The order was issued after the suspect was produced before the Kandy Magistrate’s Court, according to the Police Media Division.

The suspect was handed over to the Peradeniya Police last evening (10) for further investigations.

He was among three Sri Lankans arrested in Malaysia with the assistance of Malaysian police and Interpol, following an operation conducted by officers of the Walana Central Anti Vice Striking Force.

Ratmalane Saima had reportedly been the subject of an Interpol Red Notice.

The three suspects were brought back to Sri Lanka yesterday for further investigations.

Police said the main suspect, a 41-year-old resident of Ratmalana, is an accused in two cases before the Kandy Magistrate’s Court relating to the alleged abduction and assault of a person at gunpoint in Peradeniya in 2014, and the shooting death of another person in 2016.

The two other suspects arrested in Malaysia are scheduled to be produced before the Negombo Magistrate’s Court today (11).
