The Department of Wildlife Conservation has commenced distributing water to animals in national parks using bowsers amid the prevailing dry weather conditions.

The initiative was launched as water bodies in the Yala, Wilpattu, Kumana and Bundala National Parks have been drying up due to the ongoing severe drought, according to the Department.

Director General of the Department of Wildlife Conservation Ranjan Marasinghe said a special programme is currently being implemented to ensure an adequate supply of water for wildlife in national parks.

“We are currently implementing a special programme to provide the required water for animals in national parks under the Wildlife Department. In the main national parks, we continuously supply water through solar-powered water pumping and piping systems.”

“In addition, bowser-based water supply programmes have been initiated in areas that are not covered by these piping systems. Depending on changes in the prevailing weather conditions, we have the capacity to increase or reduce the volume of water supplied accordingly,” he said.
