Railway Station Masters warn of trade union action over unresolved issues

The Sri Lanka Railway Station Masters’ Association (SLRSMA) has stated that authorities have yet to provide proper solutions to several administrative, service and audit-related issues affecting the railway service.

In a statement, the association warned that if practical solutions to the relevant demands are not provided within a reasonable period, it will discuss the matter with fellow railway trade unions and take strict trade union action.

The SLRSMA noted that checking train arrivals and departures at railway stations is only one aspect of the audit process, while some railway stations have reportedly not undergone proper audits for several years.

The association also highlighted the delay of more than two years in appointing District Transport Inspectors, despite examinations and interviews having being conducted. It said the delay has contributed to a backlog of essential administrative work, including disciplinary inquiries.

It further raised concerns over delays in implementing service constitution and interim provisions related to recruitment procedure, which directly affect the Station Masters’ service. The association said it was unacceptable to unfairly target station master service through measures such as train service cuts.

The SLRSMA also drew attention to disruptions to daily train operations, issues in infrastructure facilities, unusable railway resources, insufficient funding for service requirements and the improper utilisation of engineering and technical resources that belong to the department.

The Sri Lanka Railway Station Masters’ Association said it regrets that despite making repeated requests for discussions with relevant authorities, including the Ministry Secretary, to resolve these issues through discussions, it has yet to receive an adequate response.

The association stressed that its objective is to ensure that necessary administrative and service-related decisions are taken promptly to maintain a reliable and efficient railway service for the public.
