Two people have been killed in a road accident after a van collided with an electricity pole on the Magalegoda –Naiwala Road in Veyangoda.

 

The deceased have been identified as 21-year-old Navod Chathuranga, a resident of Heendeniya, Veyangoda, who was driving the van, and his 80-year-old grandmother.

 

The accident had occurred while the family was returning home to Heendeniya after attending a wedding ceremony.

 

According to police, nine individuals, including the bride’s brother, who was driving the van, as well as the bride’s mother, father and grandmother, were travelling in the vehicle.

 

All nine has sustained injuries in the accident and admitted to the Gampaha District General Hospital.

The driver and his grandmother later had succumbed to their injuries, police said.

 

The remaining seven injured persons are still receiving treatment at the hospital, according to Veyangoda Police.

 

Preliminary investigations have revealed that the accident may have occurred after the driver fell asleep while driving.
