The Cabinet of Ministers has approved the provision of a monthly allowance for students with special educational needs from low-income families.
According to a proposal in the 2026 Budget, the government has decided to provide a monthly allowance of Rs. 5,000 per student to eligible students with special educational needs from low-income families.
Applications were invited to identify eligible students attending schools across the island, and 5,530 students have been identified as qualifying for the allowance.
Accordingly, Cabinet approval has been granted for a proposal submitted by the Prime Minister, in her capacity as Minister of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education, to allocate the necessary funds to provide the monthly allowance to all eligible students.
