Sri Lanka’s maritime security operations, including intensified efforts to disrupt drug trafficking at sea, were reviewed during a visit by Deputy Minister of Defence Major General Aruna Jayasekara (Retd) to the Navy Headquarters at the Defence Headquarters Complex.

Deputy Minister Jayasekara was briefed by Commander of the Navy Vice Admiral Damian Fernando and senior naval officers on the Navy’s operational activities and measures to counter emerging threats across Sri Lanka’s maritime domain, according to a statement by the Ministry of Defence.

The discussions placed particular focus on the Navy’s role in securing the waters surrounding the country and disrupting maritime drug-trafficking networks.

Senior officers outlined the tactical and strategic approaches being used to detect, intercept and dismantle networks involved in transporting narcotics through maritime routes.

The Navy also briefed the Deputy Minister on its continuous operational presence across the country’s maritime domain, with personnel and resources deployed to monitor sea areas, respond to security threats and protect national interests.

The visit comes as maritime routes remain a key focus of Sri Lanka’s efforts to prevent the movement of illicit drugs and other security threats into and through the country.

Addressing senior naval officers, Deputy Minister Jayasekara, representing the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, commended the Navy for its continued operational commitment and its efforts to strengthen maritime security.

He also praised the Navy’s performance in countering drug trafficking at sea and its contribution to safeguarding the country.
The Chief of Staff of the Navy and other senior naval officers attended the briefing.
