The Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre has issued an Amber Warm Weather Advisory for several areas, warning of increased heat stress during the daytime tomorrow (31).
The advisory, issued at 4.00 p.m. today (30), is applicable to the Eastern Province and the Polonnaruwa, Jaffna, Kilinochchi, Mullaitivu, Vavuniya and Monaragala districts.
The heat index, which indicates the temperature felt by the human body, is expected to reach the ‘Caution’ level in some areas during the daytime.
The general public has been advised to stay hydrated, avoid strenuous outdoor activities and seek shade whenever possible.
People working at outdoor job sites have been urged to take frequent breaks in shaded areas, while those indoors have been advised to check on elderly and sick persons.
Motorists have also been warned not to leave children unattended inside vehicles.
The general public is further advised to wear lightweight, white or light-coloured clothing to reduce the effects of the heat.
