Member of Parliament (MP) Ravi Karunanayake has been arrested by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC).
He arrived at the Bribery Commission, earlier today (31), to provide a statement in connection with an ongoing investigation.
The investigation has been launched over allegations that three employees recruited for a special project of the National Lotteries Board (NLB) were deployed for political activities, causing financial loss to the government.
MP Karunanayake had previously been instructed to appear before the Bribery Commission to provide a statement regarding the investigation. However, after he failed to appear, a team of CIABOC officials visited his residence on August 29.
He was not present at his residence at the time. His lawyers had subsequently requested that he be granted an alternative date to appear before the Commission, citing his involvement in arrangements related to his daughter’s wedding.
Accordingly, Karunanayake’s lawyers have stated that he is scheduled to appear before the Bribery Commission today.
