The Chief Prelate of the Asgiriya Chapter, Most Venerable Warakagoda Sri Gnanarathana Thero says it is completely incorrect to claim that lands donated by ancient kings to temples are enjoyed only by Buddhist monks and should be redistributed among the public.

The Chief Prelate made the remarks today (31) while attending a ceremony held at the Rangiri Dambulla Rajamaha Viharaya to distribute ‘Urumaya’ land permits to people residing on and utilizing lands historically granted to the temple and the Sri Vishnu Devalaya.

The Chief Prelate said a misconception was being created in society regarding lands belonging to temples and monasteries.
According to the Warakagoda Sri Gnanarathana Thero, income generated from temple lands is not used solely for the benefit of monks, but is also utilized for the welfare of the wider community, irrespective of race, religion or caste.

The Thero noted that such funds are used to support local residents, children of low-income families, Dhamma schools and those receiving Piriven education.

The Chief Prelate also urged those utilizing temple lands to use them responsibly and contribute towards the development of the country.

Meanwhile, legal ‘Urumaya’ land permits were presented to 800 individuals who have been occupying and utilizing lands belonging to the Rangiri Dambulla Rajamaha Viharaya.

Chief Incumbent of the Rangiri Dambulla Rajamaha Viharaya, Ven. Dr. Godagama Mangala Thero said the lands remain protected to this day as the Maha Sangha of the time had taken steps to secure them for the Rajamaha Viharaya and safeguarded them with great effort when the government was acquiring lands under the Waste Lands Ordinance.
