An Amber-level warm weather advisory has been issued for the Northern, North-Central and Eastern provinces, and the Monaragala District, for tomorrow (September 1), the Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre said.
The advisory, issued at 4.00 p.m. today (August 31), warns that the heat index—the temperature felt by the human body—is expected to reach the ‘Caution’ level in some areas during the daytime.
The Department of Meteorology said the heat index is calculated using relative humidity and maximum temperature and represents the conditions experienced by the human body. It should not be considered a forecast of the actual maximum air temperature.
Authorities have advised the public to take precautions against the effects of increased heat.
People working outdoors are advised to stay hydrated and take frequent breaks in shaded areas, while those indoors are urged to check on elderly and sick individuals.
The public is also advised never to leave children unattended inside vehicles.
People engaging in outdoor activities are encouraged to limit strenuous physical activity, seek shade and drink sufficient water.
The advisory further recommends wearing lightweight, white or light-coloured clothing to reduce the effects of the heat.
The Heat Index Forecast is prepared by the Department of Meteorology using global numerical weather prediction model data and is issued for the following day.
