No need for power cuts despite coal shortage – Energy Minister

The Ministry of Energy says there is no disruption to the electricity supply despite reduced coal-fired power generation, as sufficient hydropower is currently being generated.

 

Minister of Energy Anura Karunathilaka said coal stocks had declined, prompting authorities to limit power generation at the Norochcholai Coal Power Plant.

 

Two coal shipments are expected to arrive in Sri Lanka shortly, with the first vessel scheduled to arrive tomorrow (4) and the second on September 12.

 

The Minister said coal-fired power generation would return to normal once the coal from the two shipments is unloaded.

 

He stressed that there is currently no need for power cuts and urged the general public not to be unnecessarily concerned about the situation.

 

However, Education Secretary of the Frontline Socialist Party Pubudu Jagoda claimed that the shortage of coal stocks has created a serious challenge for electricity generation.

 

He made the remarks while speaking to the media after submitting a request to the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) not to increase electricity tariffs in the future.
