The management of a company in Avissawella has been fined Rs. 40,000 by the Avissawella Magistrate’s Court for manufacturing and distributing bottled drinking water with counterfeit labels.

The Consumer Affairs Authority said the court also ordered the destruction of more than 8,500 bottles of water bearing the fake labels.

The stock was seized during a raid conducted on August 21, when officials found bottled water in 19-litre, 5-litre, 1,500ml, 1,000ml and 500ml containers carrying counterfeit labels.

Legal proceedings were subsequently initiated against the company and its director.

When the case was taken up before the Avissawella Magistrate’s Court, the accused pleaded guilty to the charges.

The court then ordered that the entire stock of more than 8,500 bottles produced as case exhibits be destroyed.

The seized bottles were subsequently destroyed within the court premises.
