A special dengue control week will be conducted from today (14) until September 19 across 62 Medical Officer of Health (MOH) areas covering several provinces, Acting Director of the National Dengue Control Unit Dr. Kapila Kannangara said.

Speaking at a media briefing held today, Dr. Kannangara said the programme would be implemented across the Central, Eastern, North Western, Northern, Sabaragamuwa, Southern and Western provinces.

He noted that the number of dengue cases had remained at a high level of between 1,200 and 1,300 cases per day over the past two months. However, due to the collective efforts of all stakeholders, the daily number of cases has now been significantly reduced to between 100 and 200.

Dr. Kannangara warned that the expected rainy weather in the coming period could once again increase the risk of mosquito breeding due to the accumulation of stagnant water.

He stressed that dengue is a year-round disease and said the main objective of the special dengue control week is to prevent another outbreak by controlling mosquito breeding and reducing the risk of transmission through patients being admitted to hospitals.
