A development officer of the Uva Provincial Council, who had served as the private secretary to former State Minister of Primary Industries Chamara Sampath Dassanayake, has been arrested by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC).
The suspect was arrested yesterday (21) over allegations of accepting a bribe of Rs. 8.1 million to facilitate the export of phosphate by only three companies selected outside the proper procedure through Lanka Phosphate Limited.
A team of CIABOC officials carried out the arrest at around 4.55 p.m. yesterday (21).
The suspect is accused of facilitating arrangements for only three selected companies to export phosphate through Lanka Phosphate Limited without following the prescribed government procedures, and of assisting those companies in obtaining the relevant export licenses.
According to the allegations, the suspect had solicited and received Rs. 8.1 million from the companies in exchange for providing these facilities.
The arrested suspect is due to be produced before the Badulla Magistrate’s Court for further legal proceedings.
