Habeeb Rifan was sworn in as a National List Member of Parliament representing the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) before Speaker of House Dr. Jagath Wickramaratne this morning (24).
The swearing-in took place after Parliament commenced its sitting at 9.30 a.m.
Rifan was appointed to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Mohamed Sheriff Abthul Wazeeth, who had served as an SLMC-nominated National List MP.
The appointment was made in accordance with Section 64(5) of the Parliamentary Elections Act, No. 1 of 1981, as amended by the Elections (Special Provisions) Act, No. 35 of 1988.
Following the resignation, the Secretary of the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress was required by the Election Commission to nominate an eligible person to fill the vacancy.
Accordingly, the SLMC Secretary nominated Habeebu Lebbe Mohammed Rifan, following which the Election Commission formally declared him elected to the Tenth Parliament to fill the vacant seat.
