The ambassador to Sri Lanka from the United States Atul Keshap championed individuality and creative expression by taking an interesting approach to Superman’s choice of undergarments.

The US ambassador addressed a packed Sri Lanka Exhibition and Arts Centre that played host to Comic Con Sri Lanka 2017. Speaking to the youth Ambassador Keshap questioned his audience as to why Superman wore his underwear on the outside of his clothing.

The ambassador remembered the origin of the comic book character, who first appeared as a symbol of hope to the depressed 1930’s American at a time of severe economic and social depression. He stated that Superman shed a ray of hope to all the young minds of the nation creating a wave of creativity that transformed America and later o the world.

Ambassador Keshap further stated that Sri Lanka, through her many creative ventures has taken a step for the better by helping creativity thrive regardless of religion, race or gender. He further stated that the world will benefit greatly should the creativity of young minds be allowed to flourish.

Addressing his initial question, the American ambassador stated that Superman wore his underwear above his clothing, to embrace the fact that he was different. He stated that much like his idol, the youth of Sri Lanka should not be afraid to embrace their differences and strive towards a more diverse, united future.
