The Supreme Court ordered the Attorney General to inform the court before May 9 of her decision on whether former Army Commander Sarath Fonseka will be permitted to remain at the Nawaloka Hospital until the verdict on Fonseka’s bail petition is given.

The order was given when the bail petition compiled by Sarath Fonseka was taken up at the Supreme Court today (May 2).

The attorney who appeared for Fonseka told the court that the former Army commander was suffering from a lung related illness and was receiving treatment at the Nawaloka hospital.

He also requested the court to give an order permitting Fonseka to remain at the hospital until the verdict on his bail petition is given as moving him back to the his cell could be detrimental to his health condition.

The Solicitor General who appeared for the Attorney General stated that no statement could be made in terms of this request without proper consultation.

The court then ordered the Attorney General to inform the court of her decision on this request when the petition is taken up again on May 9.
