Police are to strictly implement the law against motorists under the influence of liquor by carrying out 24 hour operations to arrest drunken drivers starting from today.

Two fatal accidents which had taken place in Ukwatta and Minnana yesterday and resulted in three deaths were caused due to driving under the influence while an accident in Meerigama last week which claimed two lives had also been caused by a drunk lorry driver.

Police say there is a tendency towards drivers of passenger transport buses and lorries drinking alcohol before taking the wheel and therefore a continues operation will be put into action starting from today to apprehend drunk drivers.

The Deputy Inspector General (Traffic) has informed all police stations in the country regarding this matter, it said in a release.

Especially as previously operation to arrest those driving under the influence of liquor were carried out during the evening and night, now operations will be carried out throughout the day due to the number of motorists consuming alcohol in the afternoon has increased, police said.
