Former MP Dayasiri Jayasekara says he tried his utmost to topple the government while he was in the United National Party and that he had even joined forces with former Army Chief Sarath Fonseka for this purpose. However in the end I was unable to do so, he said.

Jayasekara stated that he cannot fight a lone battle to topple the government while within the opposition and that everyone needed to unit for it.

He alleged that reforms would never take place within the UNP and that disciplinary inquiries carried out against several MPs were only suspended due to the fear of facing the upcoming election.

Therefore the posts they had promised to give back will never be given and political revenge against those MPs would recommence after the polls, he said.

The former firebrand MP, who resigned from the Parliament recently to contest the upcoming Provincial Council election under the UPFA ticket, made these comments taking part in the Derana 360° television programme.

While emphasizing that he had not hoped to join the ruling party from the get go, Jayasekara revealed that he crossed over as a result of the crucial talks held with Minister Basil Rajapaksa on the day prior to his resignation from the UNP.

The one time UNP parliamentarian assured that he will definitely be elected as the Chief Minister of the North Western Province and that no one can stop it from happening.

Dayasiri said he will confirm that he is the only suitable candidate for that position by obtaining the highest preferential votes in the province.
