Budget of Valvettithurai passed amid controversy

The budget of the Valvettithurai Urban Council was passed amid controversy and protests this morning (December 27).

 

An Ada Derana correspondent reported that four members had voted in favour of the budget while only four members were present when the vote was taken.

 

The budget was presented to the Council this morning by its Chairman during which only four councillors were present. The five members who were not present at the vote were obstructed from entering the Council chambers by a group of protesters.

 

The Deputy Chairman of the Valvettithurai Urban Council Kandasamy Sadeesh told Ada Derana that he along with a four other councillors were not allowed to enter the chambers to cast their votes.

 

He stated that after making a statement to the Valvettithurai police, he arrived at the council with a police escort but was still unable to enter.

 

The Chairman of the UC told Ada Derana that he was unaware of members being obstructed from entering the council chambers. He also claimed that he had no further knowledge of the incident and denied any involvement in it.
