Owing to the recent ‘inconsiderate’ behaviour of students from two leading schools in Colombo, former leader of the Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU), Ven. Omalpe Sobitha Thero on Monday called for the ban of school big matches in Sri Lanka.

The Thero expressed this view while speaking to reporters at a press conference held in Colombo.

Sobitha Thero also went on to say in its inception, it was aimed to develop brotherhood and conviviality among schools, but the big matches are notorious due to acts of disobedience and disruption involving students now.

The Thero said the students should master patience, leadership skills and tolerate the loss through sports, but the big matches act like a platform for promotion of alcohol nowadays.
