President Maithripala Sirisena has granted presidential pardon to 762 inmates detained over minor offences yesterday (18), in view of the Vesak Poya Day.
The ceremony granting the pardon for the prisoners was held at the Welikada Prison Grounds last morning.
This is considered the highest number of inmates to be released under the presidential pardon.
Accordingly, 736 male detainees and 28 female detainees from 30 prisons across the country were released under a presidential pardon.
