The Department of Immigration and Emigration says that a new and much more simplified system to renew passports will be introduced from today. Under the new method people with passports under the M and N categories are able to easily renew their passports.

Controller General of Immigration & Emigration, W.A.C. Perera said that under the current system a person renewing their passport would have to undergo the same procedures as a person obtaining a new passport.

However under the new system all that is needed to renew a passport are the applicant’s name, date of birth, NIC number, passport size photographs and signature. This method saves valuable time, effort and resources, the Controller General said.
