October 5, 2010   02:08 pm

Ranil Wickremasinghe today made an appeal in writing to the President to release former Army Chief Sarath Fonseka. The Opposition leader made this request at parliament where he submitted the letter intended to the President.

In his letter Wickremasinghe stated that, "We in the Opposition having taken into account the services rendered to the country by General Sarath Fonseka MP, are of the view that he should not be serving a sentence of imprisonment."

The letter requests the President to ´remit the whole sentence´ and also ´restore´ Fonseka´s civil and military status.

Ranil made reference to the statement reported to have been made by President to the members of the Maha Sangha at Polonnaruwa that he would consider and appeal if it is made according to the proper procedures.
