The JVP today issued a statement condemning the alleged attacks on university students who were protesting outside the University Grants Commission yesterday. The JVP accused the police of inhumanly assaulting students as well as media personnel covering the protest.
The JVP states that the protesters had only demanded that the police drop the wrongful and unjust charges against the students, previously arrested due to political motives. Four students from the Peradeniya University and two from the Rajarata University were arrested some time back.
The Sri Lanka police have a long history of arresting people for political or other reasons and then charging them under false accusations the JVP press release stated.
Instead of granting the reasonable demands of the university students the police have brutally assaulted several of them and arrested 21 students, says the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna. They further accused that the purpose behind the actions by the police yesterday was not only to disperse the crowd of protesters as it is evident by the attack on several media personnel.
