The government will not bear the costs of the damages caused by the recent fire at the Norochchole Thermal Power Plant. The Chinese company conducting the constructions at the site will be paying for the damages caused due to accidental the fire, Minister Champika Ranawaka states.
The Minister of Power and Energy said that the estimated cost of the damaged property has not been tallied thus far and a full investigation on the Norochchole fire is still being carried out. The police report on the incident and the government investigator’s report are still being prepared, he also added.
Speaking at a press briefing at the Power and Energy Ministry he further stated that come January 2011 electricity from the Norocholai Coal Power Station will be combined to the national electricity power grid and the first ship transporting coal is scheduled to reach Sri Lanka on 23 November this year.
However it was said by Patali Champika Ranawaka that the Power Station will officially be opened on 17 November.
A fire had erupted at the Norochchole Thermal Power Plant in Kalpitiya yesterday (24 October) due to the clogging up of a chimney that emits waste from the combustion of coal. No human casualties were reported from the fire.
