Minor flood situation as Nilwala River water level rises

November 24, 2024   11:52 am

The water level of the Nilwala River has risen to a minor flood level due to prevailing rainy weather conditions, according to the Department of Irrigation.

Officials reported that the water level of the Nilwala River in the Thalagahagoda area has surpassed the minor flood threshold.

However, in the Panadugama area, where water levels had earlier been rising, the situation is showing signs of improvement as floodwaters are receding, the Irrigation Department said.

Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department has issued an advisory on the likelihood of widespread rainfall across the island, attributed to a low-pressure area forming in the Bay of Bengal.

Authorities urge residents in low-lying areas near the Nilwala River to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions as weather conditions may continue to evolve.
