President Mahinda Rajapaksa took oath as the President of the Democratic, Socialist, Republic of Sri Lanka for the second term a short while ago. He took oath before Chief Justice Ashoka de Silva.

It has been stated that over 150 foreign dignitaries have participated in the President’s inauguration ceremony.

At the 2005 Presidential elections Mahinda Rajapaksa was able to gain 4,887,152 votes, beat then Presidential candidate Ranil Wickremesinghe by 50.29% majority votes and be elected as the new President.

The 30 year long war on terrorism in Sri Lanka was eradicated during his first term as Executive President of Sri Lanka.

After the completion of the first four years in office, as permitted by the constitution Mahinda Rajapaksa campaigned for re-election and once again emerged victorious.

He managed to receive over 1.1million votes more than in his first election and secured 57.88% majority of votes.

Even though the Presidential election was held on January, according to the constitution the second term would begin on November 19, 2010 the Supreme Court had ruled.

Therefore Mahinda Rajapaksa was sworn in as the 5th Executive President of Sri Lanka today.
